High Blood Pressure
By Steven Henderson

Whilst raised blood pressure frequently affects people as they age, this doesn't imply that we should accept it as normal or inevitable.

The "silent killer", hypertension (high blood pressure) cuts many lives short of their reasonable life expectancy.

High blood pressure is the result of constriction of the arteries. This means the heart has to work harder to pump the blood all round the body.

When the blood does not circulate freely some areas of the body suffer from oxygen deprivation - which results in increased aging of the tissues.

Circulatory problems may also result in heart and kidney disease. Also in strokes which may incapacitate or end life prematurely.

High blood pressure from constricted arteries forces the heart to work harder to pump the blood around the body to deliver oxygen and nutrients and take out the trash. That additional pumping pressure causes even more hardening of the arteries. This vicious circle renders it progressively more difficult for the heart to maintain regular blood supply throughout the body.

Through avoiding the danger foods that contribute to hypertension (e.g. salt, caffeine, sugar and refined grains) you reduce the chance of getting high blood pressure and so improve your chances of living longer.

Reducing the stress in your life will help too. Also getting enough sleep regularly.

Polyunsaturated fats are safer than saturated ones. And garlic has also been demonstrated to lower blood pressure.

Moderate exercise is a super way to lower blood pressure. You will also reap many other rewards such as improved muscle tone, lower body fat, more energy, and a more positive outlook on life (which also reduces stress).
